Welcome Message from Teoh Jou Yin (Jouyin Teoh), Head of Occupational Therapy Programme at KLMUC.

Welcome to the blog of the occupational therapy programme in Kuala Lumpur Metropolitan University College. We are located in the heart of tropical Malaysia's vibrant city capital, Kuala Lumpur.

This blog was set up for the purpose of showcasing our students' experiences in university, and at the same time provide insights about occupational therapy education to the general public, particularly to those who would like to consider taking up a career in health and rehabilitation sciences. Many Malaysians are unaware that careers in health and rehabilitation sciences extend beyond medicine, dentistry and pharmacy - so we would like to take this opportunity to showcase what we learn and do in the magnificent profession of occupational therapy on a day to day basis.

Occupational therapy has its origins in the word "to occupy" and occupational therapy is a health profession that enables people from all walks of life to occupy their time and space in the most meaningful and healthy way possible.

Occupational therapy as a profession originated from the USA, and over time has become recognised as a highly sought after profession around the world. Malaysia's first occupational therapy programme, a 3 year diploma programme was established in 1984 under the Ministry of Health's Allied Health Sciences College. Currently there are only 3 government and 2 private tertiary education institutions in Malaysia who offer this course.

The occupational therapy programme in KLMUC is a 3 year diploma programme under the Faculty of Hospitality, Tourism and Wellness. We put a lot of emphasis on enabling students to accumulate real world learning experiences throughout their duration of study with us. This includes field trips, practical sessions with actual clients, and also opportunities for international exposure.

We have lots of fun in our programme, and our ultimate goal is to be able to produce the best, world-class occupational therapists in Malaysia.
